Caribbean Misadventure

When we booked our Caribbean dive trip for this year we knew that we were taking a chance on the weather in September. Of course who knew it would be a year of one tropical depression after another. A few years ago we had booked a trip in October and it was canceled due to Ivan but other years when we've gone to Grand Cayman in September, we've had great weather and been able to take advantage of package deals because of the season.
This year as the plane circled to land, the pilot said we were going to land east to west instead of the usual way, west to east. It must have been an omen although to look at the skies, you would not have guessed. The huge puffy white clouds with patches of deep blue sky were the usual fare and I thought nothing of it. We landed without problems, gathered luggage and headed for the rental car plaza. Now we were beginning to get into the unusual.
The parking lot in front of Thrifty, Avis, Dollar, and several off-brand car rental companies was also home to about a dozen chickens as best I could count. They weaved in and out of the way of the drivers renting cars--a pretty brave venture since most of the drivers were not yet used to driving on the left side of the road. As I sat on the curb and waited for our car, the rooster of the bunch got very friendly. I expected him to peck the camera at any moment.

Who knew that chickens would be an omen of things to come?
