The Modern Prodigal, A Fictional Short Story

[I've been cleaning out files again and found this story I wrote in 1997.}

I stand across from the old white Victorian house. The porch wraps the house with arms of love. I remember Mom reading her devotions sitting on the swing and Dad assembling the tricycle that I raced back and forth with the floorboards rumbling beneath me. What took me away from that security and love?
Independence and freedom to do as I pleased had lured me. My parents couldn’t do anything right and complaining about them got sympathy from my friends making me feel justified in wanting to leave.
I wasn’t a bad kid but I resented parental authority. I resented my required attendance at youth group functions. I had accepted Christ as my savior and was baptized with all the other twelve year olds before we entered the youth group. I knew I was “saved”, so what?
I turned eighteen. “Now you’re an adult,” friends told me. “You get to do what you want, when you want.” The principle sounded great but the restrictions remained. Resentment grew through my senior year in high school.
When I was encouraged to choose a college, I saw an opportunity for escape. I chose a Christian college miles away from home knowing my parents would agree to it. “After all,” I told them, “God is calling me to this campus.”
College life became a bore. I skipped classes and chapel. Homework cut into my social life too much. I found myself in danger of flunking out. I certainly didn’t want to go home. Then the idea struck.
It was time to begin registration for classes for the next semester. If my father paid for the next semester soon enough, I could withdraw and get a refund. It would be a nice nest egg for starting a whole new life and getting the total freedom I sought.
It was too easy. The money was refunded to me and I was packed and on my way to a new apartment in the city in my own car that sputtered and choked each time I turned it off. I figured once I got set up and was rolling, I would let my family know I was all right. There wouldn’t be anything they could do about it then. After all, I was an adult.
Job hunting was distasteful and offered nothing of interest that wouldn’t drain my energy for the nightlife I found. My first taste of alcohol was a bitter surprise but soon I could hold my own with the others in my new group of friends. I refused the drugs. I liked my brain the way it was. I’d seen what it did to friends.
Before long one of the guys claimed me for his own. I felt special and loved in a way that never happened with the guys in high school. It didn’t take long before we were intimate. Harley didn’t want to wear protection because it would take the fun out of it. I hadn’t planned for intercourse so I was unprepared with birth control. I snickered as I remembered the “purity pledge” I’d taken along with the rest of the church teens. Well, when love came along it didn’t matter, I told myself.
Well, love came along again—for Harley. He left me for the newest arrival in our group. The same day, my landlord cleaned out my room, changed the lock and put everything I owned at the curb. I couldn’t understand it. I was only two months behind on rent. Undaunted, I decided to rough it out in the car until I made some pocket money and I could get a new place.
A few weeks went by with no income. The money ran out. I found myself in convenient stores grabbing whatever food I could inconspicuously shove in my pockets. I remembered the lasagna Mom made monthly to feed the homeless. I thought about trying to find a church with a food program but decided I wouldn’t lower myself. I had my pride.
It got colder. The gas in my car ran out and I couldn’t move it for a few days. One morning I returned to my parking spot after foraging in some trash cans behind a restaurant. I had just lost my meager breakfast and needed to lie down. An empty space instead of my car greeted me. Sitting down on the curb I curled my arms around my knees and cried. Why can’t anything go right anymore?
After my pity part I headed for a place I had reserved as a last resort. Harley had a friend who would take me in. He promised a warm room and the friendship of other girls my age who lived in the same building. He even said there was a guard at the door for security. I should have taken him up on his offer sooner, I thought.
I arrived at the rundown apartment house and walked up to the big burly goon that was blocking half the door. “I’m here to see Freddie,” I said, my teeth chattering from the cold.
“Oh yeah? And just who would you be?” He sneered and snorted.
“I’m a friend of Harley’s and Freddie said if I needed a place to stay, I could crash here.”
“Well let’s just see.” He grabbed me by the arm and ushered me inside to a dimly lit room that smell of pot and booze. Freddie sat at the desk counting loose bills.
“Hey!” he said looking up at me. “Look who’s here. Decide to take me up on my offer? Harley told me you were one great lady. I only take in the best.” I shivered involuntarily as he leered at me. Panic welled in my throat. “You realize you have to pass the test to become one of my girls.”
I shook my head and backed away. What was this?
“Come on. Make it nice with us and you’ll pass. Then you can start earning your keep.”
Before I could react the two men pushed off my coat and pulled my sweatshirt over my head. The smell turned my stomach as their bodies closed in.
“No!” I screamed and tried to run. The back of Big Burly’s hand sent me flying across the room. He landed a few more blows before I black out. I remember waking, feeling cold and hearing sirens before I blacked out again. The pastor of the little church a few blocks from Freddie’s had found me lying in a snowbank covered in blood.
My hospital stay was short. A miscarriage had produced more blood than the beating. I had been pregnant. Upon discharge, they handed me test results and a list of clinics. I was HIV positive. The pastor met me at the hospital door. We talked about my options and he offered to buy me a bus ticket home. I hesitated. An old Bible story came into my head from nowhere. The prodigal son from the fifteenth chapter of Luke. I let him buy the ticket.
Now I stand here. Looking at the beautiful warm home full of love. During the bus trip I turned to my heavenly Father and asked his forgiveness. Would my parents forgive too? The prodigal was met halfway down the road. I will have to cross the street and ring the bell. But wait. . .Mom and Dad are on the porch smiling. Their arms are open wide.

What Do You Do After All The Canning?

It's autumn here in the north even though some days are feeling the nip of winter coming. We've brought in all the rest of the tomatoes from our plants and the last of them are turning red. I didn't do any canning or freezing since we really aren't around in the winter to eat what I might preserve. But I know many of you are busy putting things in jars and freezer bags and soon it will be time to sit down an put your feet up. Why not read a good book while you're resting from all that hard work? Here's one about a lady who turned who pickling into a business. Unfortunately she got into a little trouble when marijuana got into her recipe by mistake.

It's a fun read. Available at Amazon.com.

Still Counting Down A Deal! $5.99

The regular price of Ruby (Kindle edition) is $7.99 but today it will be at $5.99. Tomorrow the price goes up another dollar so if you are considering a copy or need to tell someone it's on sale, do it quickly!

Here is a review from one of my readers:

I loved the story of Ruby. The author Robbins takes her readers back to the Great Depression and a family of struggling carnival workers, who harbor secrets, hunger for more than just food, and make do with what a scratched-out living can give them. Astonishing love, guilt, sacrificial love, abandonment, love that will not die, and just rewards. One night, when I really needed all my sleep, I finished this book in the hours close to midnight because it kept me that riveted to the plot and characters. Well done, Karen L. Robbins! Thank you.

It's A Pocketful Of Christmas!

It's here! It's available on Amazon! And it's a great quick read for the holidays. A Pocketful Of Christmas is a novella and takes place in a little town in Pennsylvania. Here's the teaser:

In Hollitown, Joseph is not looking forward to his first Christmas without his wife. Uplifting and inspirational, I hope the story will bring joy into the hearts of my readers. I've had it in my pocket for quite some time now.

Books For The Road. . .Or Home

The weather this fall has been spectacular. Except for a few spotty days of rain and a cold day, it has been sunny and warm. When that happens, it's time to take full advantage. I've been doing some reading on our deck, a cup of coffee beside me and sunshine filtering through the waning leaves. I haven't had a lot of time to read the last few months. I've been busy writing--trying to supply some reading material to entertain others. So this weather has invited me to relax a bit and enjoy.

Here are some books you might like to indulge in on a nice fall afternoon--or if your weather is turning colder, next to a warm fire snuggled in a soft blanket. The Annie Pickels Series, The Casey Stengel Mysteries, Divide The Child and my favorite, Ruby.

The latest release is a novella, A Pocketful Of Christmas:

When you give the miracle of love will you get double back? A small Pennsylvania town will soon discover if that is true.

In Hollitown, Joseph is not looking forward to his first Christmas without his wife. When he discovers that eight year old Keri is hurting as well from missing her father, Joseph finds that a pocketful of Christmas can bring joy again into both their lives.

A Pocketful Of Christmas is available in both paperback and kindle at Amazon.

Books For The Road - The Annie Pickels Story

THEY'RE HERE!!

Several years ago (2012) to be exact I wrote and published In A Pickle, the first novel of the Annie Pickels Story. Here is the back cover teaser:

Annie Pickels, a 65 year old widowed pickle entrepreneur is in real trouble. One of her city farmers is growing marijuana on his rented plot of land. Annie, thinking it is marjoram, uses it as a secret ingredient in her pickles. Insisting Tommy is a nice young man, Annie discovers his beloved Mary Jane is not the name of his girlfriend when Annie is arrested for cultivation and sale of marijuana. But Annie knows God always takes care of her. On a cruise aboard the Queen Mary 2, Annie met Arnie, the man who may solve her impending legal dilemma. Elma, Annie's best friend, knows that Arnie is just what Annie needs in her life. But is he? Annie's niece thinks Arnie is out to fleece her aunt. Is she right? Or is Arnie the one who can get Annie out of the pickle she's in?

Now the story is completed in Pickle Dilly. Here's the teaser:

Annie Pickels, a widowed pickle entrepreneur, and her best friend Elma are off to London for a little holiday. While in London things are happening back home that threaten to cause the loss of Annie’s farm property. Once again she will rely on Arnie, her friend who is a lawyer but who wants to be so much more in her life, to help her out of trouble. A trip to Alaska and a meeting with her deceased husband’s family solves some of her problems but there are still questions to be answered. How far will the people who want her property go to get it? And, is there room in her heart for Arnie, the one Elma keeps telling her is the “man of her dreams”? It’s a dilly of a pickle Annie finds herself in but with friends, family and faith the answers become clear.

Both books are a humorous adventure that includes trips to the Caribbean on the Queen Mary 2, London and Alaska. Readers who have fallen in love with the characters, Annie, Elma and Arnie, have begged me to finish the story. It took a while but now it's here. In a Pickle has a new cover that coordinates with Pickle Dilly. After all Elma, the fashionista, would want the books coordinated.

In A Pickle and Pickle Dilly are now available on Amazon in paperback and ebook format. Enjoy!!

Books For The Road - Ruby, A Novel

Like a historical romance with a little modern twist? You'll want to tuck Ruby into your suitcase or download to your device before your next trip or even if you're doing a staycation with reading time at home. The story line involves a girl growing up in the 30s and 40s in Cleveland and falling in love. But it's wartime and her love must sail away. Will he return?

The modern twist is that Ruby's daughter is discovering her mother's first love as her mother lays seriously ill in a senior center. What secrets will she find among her mother's things and will they help her to understand her mother better?

Food for thought as you read: Our circumstances don't define us but what we do with our circumstances does.

I hope you'll enjoy this read. It may be the only historical I ever write. I'm back to working on my more humorous side of writing. The second in the Annie Pickel series.

Oh, by the way, if you're a Goodreads member, check out the free giveaway that starts on August 28. And if you are in the Cleveland area, click on the Launch Party tab above and stop in and celebrate with us.

Free eBook Giveaway! Death Among the Deckchairs

A cruise. A bikini clad body. What next?

All Casey wanted was a relaxing cruise where she could visit with her daughter, the cruise director, but suddenly she finds herself in the middle of a murder at sea. Who would have guessed the beautiful young woman dead in the deckchair next to her had an enemy who would use her love of the sun to end her life? When Max joins Casey, what she thought would be a romantic ending to her cruise becomes an intense search for evidence. Somewhere among all the dermatologists holding a conference on board ship is a killer. Is it the victim’s doctor husband? Or one of his co-workers? And how does the shark expert fit into the puzzle?

While I can't afford to give away a cruise (unless you have some way of making me a best-selling author with a huge advance) I can offer the chance to win a book that takes place on a cruise ship. Many of you probably received new eReaders for Christmas so here's a chance to win a download of Death Among the Deckchairs. Even if you don't have an eReader, it is possible with the Kindle app to download a version to your computer or smart phone. So here's how you get your free download. . .

Leave a comment below (not on my Facebook page but right here on the blog). In that comment, tell me what your dream cruise would be or tell me something that was outstanding about a cruise that you took. Leave your email address so I can contact you if you win. Please write it out as Your Name at mail dot com rather than as a link to avoid being harassed by those pesky bots that search for those things.

I will contact the winner/s (I'm guessing there will be more than one good comment) and send the code to download the book from Smashwords. That is the place where I can generate free codes for my books. You will have opportunity to choose whatever format you need--Kindle (mobi), Nook (epub), pdf, etc. I think there's even a way to just read it online.

Let's have some fun with this! Sure beats sitting at the window and watching it snow. You have until January 10 to post your comment. And be sure to pass on the news to other readers. If someone says you sent them to my blog, it's a guaranteed free download!

What's Zoo?

I'm beautiful and I know it!
For a few years now we have had a membership pass to our local zoo, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. At first we got it because it was a great place to take our grandkids when they came to visit but as they moved away, it wasn't as convenient. We reduced our pass to just the two of us. Why, you ask? Because we love the zoo!

Clemet Zoo is about 20 minutes away from us and so when the weather is nice, we go there to get some exercise. The zoo is a bit spread out so there are plenty of trails to walk on and of course we get to see the animals and flowers along the way.

We also get to reminisce about some of the places we've been. Especially in the Australian section of our zoo. We've actually seen koalas and kangaroos in the wild. They look a tad better in the zoo as they are well cared for.

Ah, finally a cool summer day!

There's always something new. This time there were a few new monkeys in the primate building we hadn't see before--young ones cuddling with mom.

Mom loves me best!
The grizzly bears are still into sibling rivalry. They've grown a lot in the last year. There were four of them at one time when they were just cubs. I believe a couple were sent off to other zoos. While they're not so cute anymore, they are still entertaining as teenagers.

My absolute favorite animals are the merkats. They are such characters! But more on that tomorrow.

Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.

My, what a long tongue you have!

Of course the animals aren't the only thing to watch at the zoo. We love to see the kids get excited when they see their favorite animals or watch some of the antics of the zoo critters. Reminds us of our grandkids and makes us wish for another visit with them to our favorite place.

Through My Lens - Zoo Flowers

Everyone's attention is so focused on the animals at the zoo that they often overlook the beautiful flowers that so many zoos have used to landscape the grounds. It takes a lot of work to to plan to soften the look of cages and exhibits and encourage the view of an animal in an environment that might have some similarity to its natural habitat. Hats off to those who work so hard to keep it looking so nice. Next time you are at your zoo, take some time to smell the roses.

Books For The Road - Divide The Child

Something old is new again! Twenty-three years ago I wrote and published Divide The Child. The cover was ugly and my picture on the back made me look like a real estate agent. But the story was too good to let go of so I pulled it out of the recesses of my computer, dusted it off and brought it up to date with cell phones, Google maps, and several other new popular techo-fangled things that weren't around in 1990. And added
a new cover and author picture.

Here is the teaser:

A mother's worst nightmare. Her child is snatched.

The kidnapper is Sebrena Warner, the child's real mother. Or is she? It has been six years since their rescue of a baby girl who was born alive after a botched abortion and Julie and Rick Sierra had begun to relax. No one questioned the adoption papers and their move out of the area to avoid being discovered. Now they are about to become embroiled in a custody battle only the wisdom of Solomon could decide.

Sebrena vows to use all the power her politically aspiring husband, Wynne, will bring her. But Wynne's life is complicated further by a reporter, Michael Boston, who threatens to expose Sebrena's past.

Judge Helen Belmonte must decide Kathy's future. She turns to the only place she knows she will find true wisdom, her Bible.

Here's an excerpt:

1.

Coffee dripped into the decanter. The aroma drifted through the quiet nurses’ station in the maternity ward. No mothers-in-waiting tonight. One lone nurse waited patiently to fill her cup. Suddenly a light flashed on the intercom board. A doctor’s voice crackled over the speaker, “Nurse! Get in here immediately!”

At the delivery room door, the nurse paused for a moment to take in what was happening. A woman on the bed moaned and thrashed about—obviously in heavy labor. What was going on? There was no one in labor when she started her break and no notice of an emergency.

“Quickly!” The doctor grabbed her arm and pulled her to the bed. “We need to give her a general.”

“I’ll call for the anesthesiologist.” She turned to reach for the phone.

“No! There isn’t time. I’ll administer it myself. Get over here and help me.” He moved to the head of the bed.

The nurse was shocked and confused. This wasn’t proper procedure. Her mind raced as the urgency of the situation accelerated. Moments were precious when a delivery went bad but training and experience kicked in. She rushed to help the doctor strap the woman’s arms down and place the mask over her face.

“Monitor her blood pressure and respiration and keep me posted while I get the fetus out,” the doctor ordered.

Fetus? Horror struck her as her gaze fell upon saline solution and instruments on the table next to the doctor. This wasn’t a delivery. This was an abortion!

“Doctor, I can’t take part in this. I don’t believe in abortion.”Her protest was futile. There was no one else around to call for help. No time. She adjusted the blood pressure cuff and prepared to monitor vital signs

“This is not the time for a political statement. We’re here to save lives.” The doctor sat down behind the white cloth draped across the knees of his patient. “I can’t worry about your confounded religious rubbish right now. What are her numbers?”

This wasn’t right. She shouldn’t be here. When abortions became an accepted procedure after a lengthy labor dispute, the hospital made a new policy. It allowed a nurse to decline an assignment to assist in an abortion provided the nurse had registered her religious objection with the department. Why hadn’t this doctor arranged for another nurse? And why was he doing this in a delivery room hadn’t been reserved?

She repeated the blood pressure and respiratory counts to him. They were precarious but not life threatening. Ironic, she thought, you tell me we’re here to save lives while you stand there taking one.

“Finally,” the doctor said with relief as he took the bloody form of a baby and roughly laid it in the bin normally used for disposing of the afterbirth. She felt sick. Concentrate on the gauges and try not to think of what is happening she told herself. At least a saline abortion was not as horrendous to watch as a dilation and evacuation—a partial birth abortion. This baby would be in one piece.

The nurse glanced at the little body in the bin. She blinked. Had she seen movement? Yes, the arms were moving slightly. She left her post and looked closely.

More movement.

            “This baby is alive!”

2.

The driver paused at the stop sign and looked both ways to confirm that the woman and little girl were still headed south on Watkins Street. She eased the yellow Mustang convertible through the intersection and made a left at the next corner. The old houses framed by scarred trees and aging shrubs disgusted her. She renewed her vow to never live in a place like that again.

As her Mustang turned left and crept to Watkins Street, every nerve in her body sparked. Twenty minutes ago, the elementary school five blocks away had released its contents of noisy children into the neighborhood. She had followed the two before. Each time she had observed the woman meet the girl at the school and walk together down Watkins Street to a dingy little house with a decrepit porch, weather-worn siding, and missing shutters.

The driver looked left and confirmed again the two still walked in the same direction as before. Yes, there was no mistake. They turned into the house almost exactly the same time as yesterday and the day before that. They were creatures of habit she observed. Morning and afternoon, they had a dull routine that fit perfectly with her plans. A lip-glossed smile crept across her face. Yes, perfectly.
