Using Your Phone Offline As GPS

Teaching an old dog new tricks is not always easy but I think I just may have this one. An article on SmarterTravel lists several ways to be able to use your phone as a GPS and do it offline, saving data and connection costs especially when you are out of the country.

Replacing paper maps with our electronic versions took a little doing but eventually we got the hang of it. We would use Google Maps and then take a screen shot so we could use the map when we weren't online and were out on the road. That worked pretty well as long as we stayed within the photograph.

We replaced that system by buying a GPS that we could preprogram with all our routes and destinations. That is still the preferred way to go--when you're driving. When you are walking, it's a whole new ballgame.

Bob has purchased sim cards for his phone to get service when we are in a foreign country to be able to use his phone to navigate when we are exploring on foot. It can get a little costly.

Now I discover that our phones can be used offline with some apps not requiring a connection and still receiving GPS signals to help us navigate. Yay! I went to the app store and found a Google Maps app that looks like it will be fun to use. I'm eager to try it out.

I sense some of you smiling. You knew about this all along, didn't you?!
